Looking for Artistic Zen

Sat Oct 17, 2009, 11:53 AM
For a while now I have pretty much run with the idea that just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. I'm not talking about major moral grounds here. I am talking about artistic style. I have the infinite curse of loving art too much. I love so many different styles and concepts that I have a huge problem choosing one. I have dabbled in cartooning, realism and many styles in between. Every time I see a style I become like a Borg on Star Trek (Just a little of my geek coming out) I look at the art start drawing some sketches and next thing I know I'm on another artistic tangent while trying to absorb their uniqueness into my own style. The only thing I do know is that I need to move away from the realism stuff as my main style. While impressive and makes people oooo and ahhhh, it takes a VERY long time to produce with large amounts of reference materials. And essentially I have no real patience for this kind of stuff. I want a painting done and done now. Occasionally I find a concept that I will want to do in a style like that but I want to take my time and spend a few hours at a time here and there on it. This idea is great for a painting that I will love in the end but does not really work for trying to get started as an illustrator. Which means I move on to stylized art style for my illustrations and keep he realism stuffs for my personal paintings.

So to this end I have made a decision, or at least a starting point. I am going to start working on characters and scenes from stories I have in my head, which hope fully will force me to focus on one style and flush out whats in my head. One day I hope to write an illustrated novel and I need to work towards that goal in mind and quit running all over the place artistically. My more immediate goal is to be working on the Con Circuit selling prints sometime next year and I haven't finished anything yet cohesive enough for that. My professors always told me just draw and you'll find a direction. I unfortunately start to draw and find myself trying to run in all directions and thus not really going anywhere. Those days have to stop if I want to do anything as a career with my work.

I am an illustrator, both traditional art and digital. Traditionally I work in Watercolor and oils but due to a lack of studio space and proper ventilation, I work primarily in digital mediums these days. Painter XI is my software of choice although I also work in Photoshop or Illustrator if I get a wild hair or I feel like the piece would be serviced better. And yes occasionally I will move furniture and open windows for an afternoon of oil painting.

I pretty much do everything from landscapes, to portraits, but my favorite subjects are often sci-fi and fantasy. I'm also just dorky enough to love comics =)

I'm also an amature photographer. I consider myself amature because I mostly photograph architecture and landscapes while on vacation overseas. These I use for reference for my painting or just for hanging on my wall.
